So, how does the process start? Well, for the Hollanders, it started with an internet search and a Facebook page. The Winograd Cabin had been written up in a very nice article in Timberhome Living; after seeing the imagery of the Cabin, she searched us out and we started a dialogue that was to bear much fruit.
After many conversations about design criteria, we came up with four initial concepts for them to mull over. Details such as the attached garage, the placement on the site slope, and square footage needs all were a factor in the four massing models we worked up. As you can see from the short slideshow, we had a 3 story with single level garage, a two story with a two story garage, a 2 story gambrel, and a split level gambrel.

However, once everybody realized that the Hollander’s hated Gambrell’s the choices were much easier!!!
Who would have thunk that someone could hate a Gambrel? We were going for the looks like a 120 year old barn on the outside, amazing contemporary interior. Turns out, there is a beautiful gambrel barn right next door, too.
Then it turns out that one of our team hates them, too. But, more importantly, Steve hates the gambrel, the gambrel will never be spoken of again.
I will admit that it is very difficult to nail the proportions of a gambrel and that most of the ones I see, I hate, too.
